Children’s First Aid & Allergy Safety for Faith Organisations

Guidance for parents, trustees, organisers and volunteers running children’s religious classes, supplementary schools, youth groups and community meals — with statutory duties clearly separated from wider good practice.

Scope & Clarification

Benedict’s Law Framework & Community Allergy Safety

Distinguishing school statutory requirements from wider faith and community group practice.

England School Allergy Safety Framework

Applies strictly to specified maintained schools, academies and pupil referral units in England. A Sunday school, supplementary faith class or evening youth club is not automatically within scope just because children attend.

For schools within scope:
  • Written, published allergy safety policy reviewed at least annually
  • Have regard to DfE statutory guidance covering staff awareness & IHPs
  • Emergency medication arrangements and incident learning protocols

Community Meals & Youth Group Best Practice

For community kitchens, Iftar gatherings, church lunches, and supplementary classes, sensible allergen controls reassure families and protect guests.

Recommended practical steps:
  • Identify key food allergens in shared meals and display clear menu labels
  • Ask parents of attending children about known severe allergies or AAIs
  • Ensure volunteers know how to recognize anaphylaxis and call 999 immediately
Proportionate guidance: Faith centres are not required to stock spare unassigned adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) unless they operate a designated statutory school. Completing a single course is educational support, not a blanket guarantee of compliance.
